The exhibition „Vilma Trummal 100“ opens at the University of Tartu Philosophicum Hall Gallery (Jakobi 2, Tartu) on 21 November, the day that the celebrated archaeologist and university lecturer was born 100 years ago. A new digital textbook „Materials in Archaeology“ will also be presented at the exhibition opening. The exhibition opens at 16.00.
Vilma Trummal (1924-2022) could in many ways be regarded as the mother of Estonian archaeology. As an archaologist, her contribution to studying the history of Tartu is remarkable and she is considered to be the founder of urban archaeology in Estonia. Many archaeologists have started their career under Trummal’s mentorship. She was the only one to give lectures in this field in Tartu for a long time.
At the exhibition, visitors can read about how Trummal became an archaeologist, her work as an archaeologist and importance as a lecturer. In addition to texts about Trummal and her legacy, the gallery exhibits photographs (including of several archaeological excavations in Tartu) and some archaeological finds.
The exhibition was created by a team of master’s students and lecturers of the University of Tartu Department of Archaeology: Marie Anna Blehner, Lisett Heero, Lisanna-Lee Leiman, Tuuli Tolmov, Kristiina Johanson and Marge Konsa.
A new digital textbook „Materials in Archaeology“ will also be presented at the exhibition opening. The texbook focuses on the properties of materials and how to study different materials and objects that are made of them. The authors of the textbook are Arvi Haak, Kristiina Johanson, Tõnno Jonuks, Mauri Kiudsoo, Heidi Luik, Lembi Lõugas, Priit Lätti, Martin Malve, Riina Rammo, Eve Rannamäe, Monika Reppo, Ragnar Saage, Krista Sarv, Ülle Tamla, Andres Tvauri ja Linda Vilumets. Editors are Kristiina Johanson and Riina Rammo.
